The categories typically included in discussions about diversity are race and ethnicity, gender and age, and sexual orientation and religion. These elements reflect significant aspects of identity that can influence a person's experiences, perspectives, and interactions in various contexts, including workplaces, schools, and communities.

While language skills can contribute to diversity, they are not considered a primary characteristic of diversity in the same way as the other aspects mentioned. Language skills pertain more to communication ability rather than integral aspects of personal identity or societal delineation that diversity generally encapsulates. Thus, while language is important in fostering understanding among diverse groups, it does not fundamentally define diversity in the same context as race, gender, age, or sexual orientation do.
